EEG Neurofeedback

EEG Neurofeedback page created August 23, 2019. By Lucrezia Mangione, MA, LPC, LCPC, NCC, BC-TMH, DCEP.

Committing yourself to brain training using EEG Neurofeedback is a pledge for better health. It’s empowering, gentle, safe, and non-invasive. It’s also impactful.  For most people, once sessions are completed, they don’t need to return because it’s typically long lasting and for most, permanent.

How might it help you?  EEG neurofeedback empowers your brain to become more efficient which strengthens how it functions.

Help your brain to become stronger and more efficient. In doing so, you may improve your mood, your thinking, your sleep and how you act towards yourself and others.

What is Brain Training?

EEG Neurofeedback is helping the brain to get better and stronger through learning. EEG Neurofeedback is biofeedback using brain waves to help the brain learn to improve its functioning.

The brain loves to learn. It's your brain’s favorite exercise. Neurofeedback is exercise for brain.  When you exercise it you improve how it's functions and works.  This may help to improve how you manage, cope, self-regulate and ultimately, how you cultivate your resiliency.

Brain training is done by you. You are coached along by a licensed professional, a brain trainer.  The brain trainer will use a computer designed to read your brain’s electrical pulses (called brain waves) that:

  • Creates a learning game which you
  • Play to enhance the functioning of your brain

Do electrical pulses go into my brain?

No.  EEG Neurofeedback is 100% non-invasive.  No electricity or electrical pulses come from the equipment into or out of your brain. The neurofeedback equipment used at Handcrafted Health, llc is an EEG which is short for electroencephalography. It monitors and records your brain's electrical activity more commonly called brain waves. The process is done using sensors, also called electrodes, that are placed on your head and are connected to the EEG. Also referred to as a biofeedback neurofeedback system or equipment. The system then displays, in real-time, your brain's electrophysiological activity.

Are there side effects in receiving neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback training side effects per ISNR.org

I'm on medication(s). Can I receive EEG Neurofeedback training?

For some  people, yes.  For others on certain medications, they will need to speak with their doctor first.  With approval and monitoring by a physician they can receive EEG biofeedback neurofeedback training.

Medication and medication management is not a part of our professional practice here at Handcrafted Health.  If you are wanting to understand or change anything about your medications, you will need to speak directly with your medical primary care provider to decide together what’s best for you.

We welcome working with you and your doctor to support your chosen course of action.  This can be discussed more thoroughly at your initial appointment.

How much does Neurofeedback cost?

For 15 to 30-minute session, our research currently shows these rates in Connecticut and nationally:

  • CT: rates range from $75 to $200
  • Nationally: rates range from $65 to $250

Here at Handcrafted Health, LLC, our primary licensed counselor and neurofeedback practitioner/brain trainer, Lucrezia Mangione, is working towards her board certification. Reduced rates under $65.00 are being offered until late winter 2020. Call or email for specifics at 802-578-3700 or connect@handcrafted-health.com

How many sessions will I need?

It’s unknown. This depends on your goal, your symptoms and whether you’re taking medications.

Everyone is different.  The range of sessions can be from 5 to 100 sessions in certain cases. For minor symptoms and general health maintenance it may be in the low range 15-25 sessions.  For serious health concerns it could be on the higher range, 30 - 100 or more sessions.

Your neurofeedback brain trainer will work collaboratively with you to discuss, decide on a course of action and re-evaluate regularly. Here at Handcrafted Health, llc, our goal is to assist you efficiently and cost-effectively.  Most people see some improvements in approximately 10 sessions.  This may not mean that your brain training is “done.”  It does mean you can decide if you want to proceed.

How long does Neurofeedback take to work?

It depends on each person’s goal(s) and whether there is a health problem present.  For some people, symptoms see improvement in about 10 sessions. For others, symptoms begin to shift in about 20 sessions or more.  Here at Handcrafted Health, llc we work together. We keep a close eye on you, collaborate and talk about the impact of EEG Neurofeedback.  We check regularly and work together towards your goal.

I met my goal, do I need to come back?

Likely not.  The effects are usually long lasting once your goal(s) are met.  That said, some people may need to return for a refresher session(s).

How long is a session?

The first session is up to 60 minutes.  Follow-up sessions are up 25 minutes.

Does insurance cover neurofeedback?

Some insurance companies and plans do cover neurofeedback.  You will have to check with your insurance company directly.  Do keep in mind that Handcrafted Health does not take insurance for EEG neurofeedback.
